About this project

Petition.nyc is a project by New York City Council Member Ben Kallos, a candidate for Manhattan Borough President. Council Member Ben Kallos has been at the forefront of using technology to provide transparency in local and state government.

Kallos believes in empowering the community to add their names to petitions as they fight tough battles winning more than 1,000 pre-k seats for the Upper East Side, the first of its kind community rezoning to stop supertalls, a ban on the sale of single use plastic bottles on city property just to name a few.

Ben Kallos has been at the forefront of using technology to make government more open and accessible to New Yorkers. When he was a chief of staff in Albany, he saw that residents had no way to keep track of how their state legislators voted on issues like school funding, affordable housing, and medicare. To bring an ounce of accountability to Albany, he built a website and posted Assembly Members' voting records online in real time. After Ben forced the issue, the Assembly and Senate passed laws requiring all votes to be posted online for the first time for residents to see. Petition.nyc is a continuation of this career-long mission for accessibility and transparency in government.

We've done it before and we will do it again, because together we can make the city a better place.
